Ydinkysymys: Emopunkkaria itkettää, kiinnostaako ketään?

The Used on My Chemical Romancen ohella yksi suosituimpia emo-punkrock yhtyeitä Amerikassa. Itkunrenkutusta, surf-komppia ja puolihullua huutamista on jälleen kerran pelipöydällä, mutta The Usedilla on myös sovitustajua. Kappaleet ovat hienosti eteenpäin soljuvia, yllätyksellisiä ja luovalla tavalla hulluja. Harmillisesti melodiat eivät ole kovin iskeviä saati mieleenpainuvia, mutta yhtyeellä onkin poikkeuksellinen sävelkorva. Kappaleitä ei ole rakennettu perinteisille hittikertosäkeille vaan pikemminkin oudoille ja hämmästystä aiheuttaville sävelmille. Toki joukossa on myös perinteisempää tavaraa, mutta ei mitään mikä jäisi mieleen erityisen hyvänä.

The Usedilla olisi loistavat puitteet olla suuri bändi. Erikoisuuden puolesta yhtye voisi päästä vaikka kuinka pitkälle, mutta sävellykset tarvitsisivat enemmän koukkuja, että tämä olisi mahdollista. Siinä missä MCR rakentaa kappaleet nimenomaan hyvien melodioiden varaan, The Used jää outoilemaan omiin oloihinsa. Tässä kohdassa olisikin kehittämisen paikka.
