Poika istuutui tytön viereen. Tyttö ei kiinnittänyt häneen minkäänlaista huomiota ensin. "Anteeksi, mutta oletko uusi täällä?" Hän kysyi. Tyttö käänsi katseensa poikaan kummastuneena ja upotti kristallin siniset silmänsä pojan omiin. "Niinkin voisi sanoa? Nimeni on Ellie Stewarts." Tyttö vastasi räpläten pitkiä vaaleita hiuksiaan. Tyttö oli kaunis kuin enkeli. Pojan kännykkä soi. "Niin? Ai hei äiti. Jo 17.53? olen tulossa. Joo.Moimoi." Hän sanoi ja sulki puhelimen. "Haluaisitko tulla kanssani vaikka kahville tänään?" Tyttö kysyi ujosti. "En tänään... Huomenna on uusi päivä. Jos annan numeroni soitatko minulle?" Poika vastasi ja kaivoi repustaan kynää ja paperia alkaen kirjoittaa sille numeroaan. "Niin huomenna on todellakin uusi päivä..." Tyttö mumisi hiljaa surullisesti ja otti pojan numeron. Hän kiitti ja jäi bussista pois. Muut bussissa olevat katsoivat poikaa kulmat kurtussa.
Seuraavana päivänä tyttö soitti pojalle ja sopi tapaamisen ravintolan takana.
Pojan mennessä paikalle ei siellä kuitenkaan näkynyt ketään. Hän alkoi kuulla surullista laulua ympäriltään. Kylmä henkäys hänen korvansa juuressa, johon oli sekoittunut hiljainen kuiskaus: "En kuole yksin."
Seuraavana aamuna lehdessä:
3.7.08 Noin 13 vuotias blondi tyttö Ellie stewarts murhattiin. Seuraavana päivänä poliisi sai tiedoituksen saman ikäisen pojan katoamisesta.
