Cliff Burton liittyi Metallicaan 1982 ja soitti sen esikoisalbumilla Kill 'Em All, jonka materiaali ”(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth” -kappaletta lukuun ottamatta oli tosin kirjoitettu lähes valmiiksi ennen Burtonin liittymistä yhtyeeseen. Hänen soittotaitonsa kuuluivat selkeämmin Metallican toisella albumilla Ride the Lightning, etenkin instrumentaalikappaleessa ”The Call of Ktulu”. Burtonin viimeiseksi jäänyt albumi Metallican kanssa oli kriitikkojen kehuma Master of Puppets, jonka myynti on tähän mennessä ylittänyt Yhdysvalloissa kuusinkertaisen platinarajan ja joka sittemmin on tasaisesti sijoittunut eri äänestyksissä parhaiden metallimusiikkialbumien joukkoon.

Cliff Burton oli vasta 24-vuotias kuollessaan vuonna 1986 kesken Metallican Ruotsin-kiertueen yhtyeen kiertuebussin pyörähdettyä ympäri huonolla tiellä kurjassa säässä.
