Kokonaan tupakasta luopuneilla entisillä tupakoitsijoilla ja nuuskaan siirtyneillä tupakoitsijoilla ei ollut eroa odotettavissa olevassa eliniässä, todettiin australialaistutkimuksessa. Jos tupakoitsijat siirtyisivät suurin joukoin nuuskan käyttäjiksi, saavutettaisiin kansanterveydellisiä etuja, arvioivat Queenslandin yliopiston tutkijat.

Nuuskan sallimisesta olisi siten enemmän hyötyä kuin haittaa, olettaen että nuuskan käytön vapauttaminen lisäisi tupakoitsijoiden siirtymistä nuuskaan kuin aiemmin tupakoimattomien nuuskan käyttöä. Nuuska on kielletty EU:ssa Ruotsia lukuunottamatta ja myös Australiassa se on nykyisin kiellettyä.
