Nyky-yhteiskunnassamme elämisen rytmi on kääntynyt päälaelleen: kesällä ollessamme täysissä ruumiinvoimissa lepäämme, ja kaamoksen aikaan paahdamme täysillä eteen päin taistellen samalla luontaista rytmiämme vastaan, joka kehottaa meitä ottamaan rauhallisemmin ja vetäytymään pesäkoloomme.

Piileekö perimmäinen syy kaamosmasennukseen ja pimeään vuodenaikaan liitettyihin negatiivisiin mielikuviin siinä, että eristämme itsemme luonnon rytmistä emmekä anna tilaa niille tuntemuksille ja tarpeille, joita eri vuodenajat meissä herättävät? Olemmeko länsimaisessa tehokkuusajattelussa pyrkineet kokonaan kieltämään elämän kääntöpuolen: pimeyden, sisäänpäin kääntymisen ja kuoleman, ja kehomme vain pyrkii muistuttamaan meitä tästä vallitsevasta vastavoimien epätasapainosta?

Todennäköisesti oppisimme paremmin nauttimaan syksyn pimeistä sadepäivistä, jos meillä olisi mahdollisuus hidastaa elämisen tahtia ja kokea pimeys tarpeellisena osana luonnon kiertokulkua. Ehkäpä voisimme oppia pimeyden kautta jotain myös itsestämme, jos lakkaisimme taistelemasta sitä vastaan jatkuvan keinotekoisen valaistuksen avulla. Kenties meidän olisi myös helpompi hyväksyä vanheneminen ja kuolema, jos pysähtyisimme syyspimeällä havainnoimaan sen merkitystä ympäröivän luonnon kannalta.

Suomen kielessä on edelleen löydettävissä kaikuja menneiden aikojen vuodenkierron ja luonnonilmiöiden vaikutuksesta ihmisten elämään. Tiesitkö, että esimerkiksi helmikuu on saanut nimensä siitä, miten ensimmäiset kevätauringon lämmittävät säteet saavat lumen sulamaan puiden oksilla pisaroiksi, jotka ilman jäähtyessä muuttuvat kauniiksi helmiksi?

Tutkimalla vanhan kansan tapoja ja sanojen sekä sanontojen alkuperää voimme saada oivalluksia ja saavuttaa hienovaraisemman yhteyden ympäröivään luontoon ja sitä kautta myös omaan itseemme.
