Pohjois-Korean hallinto puuttuu myös kansalaistensa ulkonäköön. Tammikuussa 2005 Pohjois-Korean televisio aloitti massiivisen kampanjan pitkätukkaisia miehiä vastaan. Televisiossa kehotettiin miehiä leikkaamaan hiuksensa "sosialistisen elämäntavan mukaiseksi". Pitkän tukan kerrottiin mm. "syövän happea aivosoluilta", kuluttavan valtavasti ravintoaineita ja energiaa sekä kaikin tavoin haittaavan älyllistä kehitystä. Televisiossa näytettiin miehiä, joilla oli sopimattoman pitkä tukka sekä kerrottiin heidän nimensä ja osoitteensa.
