Anyhow, i feel you missunderstood the part where i said means above ends, i was not talking about intentions... Intentions are the intended results of your actions, not the actions themselves, actions themselves were what I meant. That little rule does have it's exceptions ofcourse, for instance with your hitting example hitting someone as an action is wrong, but if the consequence of that is that someone is saved then it is the correct thing to do, when it comes to violence it usually is simply consequence vs consequence when you choose what to do. Though this can be put in the means category as "Save the girl" or "Ignore it and let the guy proceed" aswell.

On the Hitler example i would like to just say that he was a madman and no ordinary philosophical thinking on a "normal person" level is going to end it, but i guess that would be naive to say. Anyhow, i've always felt that murder of a human being is one of the absolute "do not do" rules, taught pretty much the second you learn of death, and also most likely exists in our nature. So what i am saying is that Hitler was mostly driven by lust. Patriotism, usually viewed as a good thing, when taken to extremes will make you think your own country/race is superior to others, he was most definately not driven by good intentions as his patriotism completely ignores what he was most likely taught as a young child.

I'd also like to point out even though i believe morals are implemented through education, that some part of it is in our nature, for example the one i mentioned before; Preservation of human life. Highly optimistic view that one, but most murderers do actually feel sorry for what they did, and could be considered victims of their upbringing and circumstances. Murderers who do not feel any remorse are driven by lust, and they are non-moral beings that i don't really even consider human.

Ihmisyys, tekstiä siitä. Jälleen englanniksi koska alunperin foorumilel kirjoitettu.

Personally i believe that Humans are an animal race among others, but we are superior because of our intelligence... Armed with that intelligence we have created order in the world by creating massive communities.

Wrote some text concerning this whole thing some months ago... No references but i'd still love to hear if there are any similar views or anything that contradicts what i've said.

"Humans are pack animals, without the community there is no individual. The concept of self is build by the way you see people around yourself. The image of how you are is made from comparisons you make in your mind, this determines whether you think you are smart, stupid, and so on. There are no definite facts on such things, yet it's how you build the image of yourself. There also exists a true-self, which is the sum of all your personalities, it is your trueself that does the thinking and therefore affects the way you are, which in turn makes the image of yourself in other peoples minds. Their reaction to yourself is what will change how you seem on the eyes of others and yourself.

Everyone sees every person differently, all these persons are the same person yet they are different, all of them are you and the sum of them is you aswell. The true-self rarely is the same as the self as seen by others, and as seen by your true-self, this is the reason you might end up hating or disliking yourself. Disliking yourself is not a bad thing, it is a natural thing and it is what makes you improve yourself.

Humans are an animal race as any other, their superiority in nature is simply because of their intelligence. Intelligence is something that grows on every single human, it is not there when you are born. There are those who claim it is because of a soul that we are superior, and i agree with that. Soul is the same as your true-self, it is what does the thinking and affects the way your body reacts."

KorruMoral PhilosophyLuonut: KorruMaanantai 21.01.2008 11:57

Ajattelin lisätä tän tänne huvikseni, tässä huomattavasti pienennettynä ajatukseni miten moraali toimii. Englanniksi sillä alkuperäisesti kirjoitettu englanninkieliselle foorumille.

Personally i think morality is implemented somewhere in the learning process. However i also think it's partly in nature, mainly so that once we are born there is an empty pool, that later fills up with "moral codes" that you can choose to follow or to not follow.

There was something about morals being in our genetic code, but i can't agree with that... At least when it's up to more complex issues. I think caring for other human beings is something that exists when you are born, but it's because of your need for other persons, it is completely selfish at first. You truly learn all of this much later when your parents or the education system sets you some borders of what is right or wrong.

I wrote a little text on my beliefs of how morals work some months ago, even though it was at night and it's a bit confusing i decided maybe i should paste it here. To clarify this is the way i see morals, i am aware that there are many contradicting views, especially on the ends and means part.

"Morals are something that is taught to humans, it is a product of their environment. Everyone has a different sense of morals, and some choose to ignore them. Morals are the same as the how you view what is the right thing to do, and what is the wrong thing to do. Even if some people are taught these things they choose to ignore them, and live by their own "code". These people include people who value money over human lifes, people who can kill other people without feeling guilt, and so on. Morals make the structure of any society, it is what laws are based on, and you learn them before you learn of the laws of society.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to morals, every person can be justified in what he does as long as he thinks he is doing the right thing. Societys justice are not the same as individual justice, commonly accepted good is not the only good in the universe.

Things like lust for money, pleasure and power are not something that can be said to be evil or good, however it is the actions that you have to live by to get there that matter. The path is set by choices, and the choice is usually as simple as; do the right thing as you believe it to be, and do the thing that will get you closer to what you lust for. In-short; following your own moral code or ignoring it. Lust for any of these things can be considered good by some people, however it is a "Ends justify the means" thought, and therefore does not think of the actions enough to be considered moral-code.

Ends do not matter in morals, only the means. Ends matter in lust, not the means.

I personally believe humans are inherently neutral, but become either good if they choose to follow their own moral code, or evil if they choose to ignore their own moral code. "
